Who should be the auditor?

Your first step to conducting a health and safety audit

Your auditor must organise the opening meeting
Anyone can attend the opening meeting. You auditor should have at least one management representative and the health and safety representative from each department or area attend the meeting.

In the opening meeting, the auditor must inform all managers on the following:

•    The auditing process;
•    The documents to be used; and
•    Areas to be inspected.

He must also explain the purpose of the opening meeting, using these three points:

  1. Confirm the scope and method of the audit that your auditor will conduct.

Example
This Specification covers the requirements for eliminating and mitigating incidents and
injuries on the particular project.
The scope also addresses legal compliance, hazard identification and risk assessment, risk control, and promoting a health and safety culture amongst those working on the project. The specification also makes provision for the protection of those persons other than employees;

  1. Put company management at ease by explaining to them that the audit process is focused on continuous health and safety improvement for the employees and the company as a whole; and
  1. Create the right atmosphere by letting them know that the auditor’s there to help and not hinder them.

Opening meetings must always have an agenda

Use these four agenda points in your meeting:

1.    Purpose of audit;
2.    Scope of audit;
3.    Agenda points to cover; and
4.    Review of the audit schedule.
